The case-of-the monk • illodoT,- who-is olosely confined at Nijni Novgorod, is assuming sensational proportions. \ Several newspapers have been prosecuted for publishing Illodor's pronouncements. Eight thousand of his followers have notified the synod of their intention to leave the Orthodox Church. The synod ,has decided to unfrock Illodor, whose followers are pressing the Duma to secure the monk's public trial. In April of last year the monk Illodor secured a remarkable triumph over the efforts of the Holy Synod, the Government, and the police, to remove him from the See of Tsaritsyn, in the Government of Saratov. He is Tegarded ns a demigod by his 12,000 followers, who ■ form the nucleus of a reform movement in the Orthodox Church, threatening to overturn the hierarchy. His exploits have appealed to millions of humbler church members, who regard him as a martyr. The Bishop of SaTatoy was dismissed for disobeying the Tsar's ukase and the Holy Synod's decree enjoining the expulsion of themonk. ■
