THE PRICE OF BUTTER.

RISES A PENNY PEE POUND. The wholesale—and consequently the retail—price of butter (all factory brands) will be increased a penny per pound from and including to-day, which will bring the retail price up to Is. 3d. per potmd. The reason for the rise is said to be the firming in the price of New Zealand butter at Home and in Vancouver. "If the price is not raised now," raid one merchant, "those holding stocks will cither ship to London, or Vancouver, end the shortage occasioned by that more would inevitably have the effect of raising the price. So there i= no escape. It is the old law of supply and demand."
