As the result of a meeting; at the Mansion llouso, a British Committee to arrange for the celebration of tlio centenary of tho peaco of tho English-speaking nations has bsen formed. A sum of iCCO.OOO is to bo raised. The preliminary proposals include the erection of a monnment to Georgo Washington (fast President of tho American Republic), at "Westminster Abbey, and the purchase of Solgrave Manor, Ms ancestral homo. Tho Prime Minister (the Right Hon. H. H. Asquith), Sir Edward Grey (British Foreign Minister), and Mr. Theodore Roosevelt wrote in support of the movement. The late Mr. Whitolaw R-eid, in a letter dated December 6, expressed -the hope that he would 1)6 able to attend the meeting, adding that the movement could not bo | more opportune and more helpful to tho | peace' of the world.
Earl Grey, Lord Emmot, Lord Woardalo, and the Burgomaster of Ghent (where tho treaty of 1814 was signed) were present at tbe meeting.
