PERSONAL ITEMS.
Mr. W. T.- Caldow, • secretary of the Boyal Choral Society,' received word last evening that bis Excellency Lord Liverpool and a party of six intend to be present at the "performance of "The Hessian" in the Town Hall to-morrow evening. This will be the first appearance of Lord Liverpool at any public entertainment in New Zealand niter being- sworn in as Governor of New Zealand.
The Hon. \V. F. Massey, Prime Minister, will return to Wellington from Auckland by the speoial train which brings the Governor-Designate at 12.30 to-day. The Hon. W. Fraser will arrive by the Napier express from Napier. The Hon. I\ M. B. Fisher remains in Auckland, and the other Ministers are in town. .
His Honour Mr. Juetioo Sim was a passenger for south by the Mararoa last evening.
Mr. D. Robertson, Secretary for the Post Office, leaves for- Nelson on Saturday on holiday leave. He will return beforo January 1, when ho will take up his now <lutios as Chief Commissioner under the Civil Service Act. Tho Act docs not como into force until April 1, but the Commissioners will need the intervening months to become acquainted with the Service and to classify it.
Mr. Tom Pollard, the well-known theatrical manager, of Greymouth, is o visitor to Wellington. The "llerry Widow" Opera Company, which arrived from Bydney yesterday, goes to the West Coast un* tier arrangement with Mr.' Pollard.
The condition of Mr. J. M. Bitchie, of Dunedin, ex-chairman' of the National Mortgage Company and a director of tho Union Steam Ship Company, is causing his family gravo anxiety. ■ . .
Mr. James Doyle ie ■to act as referee at the big tug-of-war carnival which is to be held in the Town Hall, commencing en Boxing Night.
The Bev. Father Foley wns a passenger from Sydney by the' Ulimaroa yesterday.
Mr. E. Fletcher has now been chairman of the Harbour Board for three consecutive years, and regret was expressed by members of the board last night at the possibility of his retirement. It appears that there is a custom that a chairman shall not hold oflioe, for more than two years in succession, but more than one member of the board expressod the opinion last night that this custom should bo now broken down. In doing so they paid glowing tributes to tho manner in which Mr. Fletcher had filled the office and to the excellent relationships that had .existed between all parties under his rule.
