THE COMPANIES' CONFERENCE.

The dispute between the meat feezing companies and the slaughtermen whom they employ has not so far reached an acute stage, and probably it will not until the latter half of next month, when tho existing award expires, and when the cancollation of tho registration of all the. unions will be complete. In the meantime the unions, having submitted their demanus, are doing nothing. • . Representatives of all tho New Zealand companies arc to meet at Christchureli tomorrow in conference to discuss the demands, and what the companies will do concerning them. The North Island companies' representatives will meet in Wellington to-day in an informal conference, preparatory to the meeting at Christchurch. Hitherto, tho sheds have been slack, but stock is coming forward now, and full time is being worked at Ngahauranga and Petone. There are upwards of 50 men on the board at tha Gear works, and slightly less at the Meat Export Company's works, but men are bjing taken on as they offer. It is said that theTo is a probability that many of tho usual visitors from Australia will net come to New Zealand at once, preferring to wait until any trouble has been finally settled. . . ■
