MASTERTON NOTES.
(Trom Our Special Correspondent.] Masterton, December 16. Mr. S. R. Lancaster, the well-known breeder of tho Manawatu, was present at the meeting of the committee of the Masterton A. and P. Association on Saturday last, and mado the suggestion that the schedule lor the local, show be issued at an earlier date than at present. It was pointed out that some delay had been occasioned this year through circumstances over which tho association had no control. Mr. Lancaster was, however, thauked for his suggestion. It,is expected that the schedule lor the February show will be out in the course of a few days. ■ There are at present thirty-six patients in the Masterton Hospital, nine of whom are suffering from scarlet fever. ' Boring operations at tho Mangaone oilfields are progressing slowly. A good deal of unexpected obstruction has been met with, and the machinery has been put to a severe test. The bore has reached a depth of about 100 ft.
The Masterton Dairy Company is making an advance of Is. per lb., for the November supplies of butter-fat. During the month of November the company made 34,8GG1b. of butter, being an increase of 73581b. on the corresponding month of last year. The company is now receiving cream . from suppliers in tho Tinui district.
A consignment. of 10,000 rainbow trout was sent from the Masterton hatcheries to Feilding to-day, for. liberation in the Oroiia Itiver.
The rivers and streams in the Masterton district are very low just' now. Nevertheless, anglers report having obtained good baskets during the past week. The Masterton Homing Pigeon Club flew a race from Auckland on Saturday last, an airline of 28G miles. Tho winner turned up in W. Dowliug's "Splash," which -did the distance in 8 hours 35 minutes.
The Melbourne cricketers arrive here on Tuesday evening. They will be offioially welcomed by members of tho Wairarapa Association and will be accorded a civic reception on Wednesday morning. The team selected to represent Wairarapa in the match which commences at two o'clock on Wednesday afternoon, is as follows:—M'Alpine, Collins, and Thorpe (Martinborough), Jordan, Redmond, Congdon, B. Perry, and Logan (Masterton), Hickson (Carlton), Smart (Carterton), and Keinball (Carlton). K. Welch, will be the twelfth man. The foundation-stone of the new District High School at Eketahuna is to be laid on Thursday next by Mr. Robert Lee, chairman of the Wellington Education: Board.
