PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A meeting of'the Petone Borough Council was held last evening. The following wero present:—The Mayor (Mr, J. W. M'Ewan), Councillors Short, List, Wakeham, Brocklebank, Cox, Burridge, Trueman, Lodder, and Piper. . A deputation representing the Petone Navals, headed by Major Bevah, jvaited upon the council and asked a grant of a subsidy of .£lO towards the upkeep of the two naval cutters. It was pointed out. that tho boats were private property, and they had in time past been used for the purpose of life-saving, and might be put to the same use ill future. The council decided to grant the subsidy.
In his report, the engineer suggested that, instead of building a concrete wall along five chains of the water-front at a cost of .£225, as had been intended, he should, as an experiment,' be allowed to build a wooden protection with jarralr planks. He was of,opinion that this would serve the purpose aimed at. The suggestion was referred back to the Works Committee. A letter was'received from the UnderSecretary of Internal Affairs, acknowledging receipt of letter re sale of coal by municipalities, and stating that if it is found that borough councils generally desire that such powers be granted, the Government will favourably consider the matter, with a view to introducing legislation next session.
The Wellington Eugby Union wrote inquiring if the leasing of the .• Recreation Ground was to be dealt with at the January meeting of the council, and whether tie union Tould wait on the council, in regard thereto. The council decided to notify the union that the council would discuss the matter with them at the nest meeting on January 13. The Mascotte Picture Company, and also Hayward's Picture Company, wrote applying.for permission to screen pictures of a suitable nature on Christmas Dav.— Leave was granted. The' secretary of the Fire Board forwarded a copy of a letter received from the Minister for Internal Affairs consenting to the board selling to the council the old fire station site for the prico originally agreed upon.—lt was decided that trio council, take back the section at the price originally agreed upon. Mr. W. B. Gough was appointed registrar and dog tax collector for the ensuing year. ■
