"The truth .is," states the "Chronicle,","there is a widespread aversion to the diverting of religious funds for secular purposes/ Therefore,' soma concession ought to be. made."
The amendment in question was defeated by 265 votes to 215, amid Opposition cries of "Saved by the Irish vote!"
