The two years' scholarship to the Sacred Heart College, Ponsonby, of the annual value of 35 guineas,, and open to pupils from the Roman Catholic primary schools of the Dominion, has been won this year by Mortimer Eeddington, of the Marist Brtthers' School; Christchurch. INVERCARGIU'S WATER SUPPLY. I nvercargill, December 13. to the spell of dry and hot -weather, the town water supply is proving inadequate, and consumers are being warned not to waste supplies. An. agitation ,is being commenced to increase supplies by sinking another well at the water tower, or bringing in a gravitation supply.SHORTAGE OF TRUCKS. I nvercargill, Deoember.l3. A shortage of trucks is causing great inoonvenieuoe to commercial and business firms in Southland. The Town Council is finding difficulty in getting trucks for coal for tne gasworks. and metal from the quarry for the roads._ Representations on the matter are being made to the Minister for Railways by the Town Council and the Chamber of Commerce. A business man stated to-day that the volume of business had increased forty per cent., while the trucking capacity had l increased only threo per cent. INQUESTS. Christchurch, December 13. The body of Thomas Keenan, aged 51, was found oil the hills yesterday afternoon. Medical evidence at the inquest showed that death was due to apoplexy. Gisborne, December 13. At the inquest on Frank Warbick, who was killed at Port Awanui, a verdict was returned that death.was due to his accidentally falling backwards from the wharf into a boat; no blame was attachable to anyone. At_ an inquest at Tokomaru Bay regarding; George Walworth, a verdict that deceased strangled himself while in a state of depression was returned. ALLEGED CARGO BROACHING. Dunedin, December 15. , Arthur Wilts, a fireman on the liner Paparoa, was arrested on Saturday afternoon on a charge of cargo-broaching,, a roll of high-class waterproof tweed, valued ftt ,£lO, having been found in his possession.' It is reported that a case containing tweed was broken open, and that material to the value of about .£SO is missing. INJURED MAN LIES UNTENDED. Christchurch, December IX 1 Alfred Lowrey, G3. years of age, was brought to tlio Hospital this morning after several days' suffering with a crushed leg. He was employed' at Halswell felling trees by himself, and last Monday a tree which, hung on to another fell, pinning him to t'he ground. It took Lowrey three hours to extricate himself, but he could not walk, and lay for a day and a half in the open air, no ono coming near him. His calls were at length heard by Mr. John Murphy, a farmer, who took him to his (Lowrey's) tent, where Lowrey, thinking the injury was slight, attended to it himself, Mr. Murphy sending him food.' This morning Lowrey's leg was much worse, and a constable brought him to the Hospital, where tho right leg was found to be shattered. PRICE OF BREAD RAISED. Dunsdin, December 14. The prioe of the four-pound loaf is to be raised a half-penny from Monday, MOA SKELETON FOUND. Motuoka, December 14. An almost perfoct skeleton of a moa, ten feet high, was unearthed hero yesterday. "fireT Christchurch, December 14. About noon on Friday a house property, botwenu Southbrook and Flaxton, was destroyed by fire. It had lately been sold, to Mr. Flynn by Mr. F. Baker, and tho former's furniture and effects were almost all burned. Tho building was insured for .£3OO with the Northern Company, and the furniture for .2100 with another company.
