The Hon. Jamea Allen left on a trip to England, by tho Moeraki yesterday afternoon, accompanied by Mrs. "Allen and Miss A Hon, Ho was farewelled at the ship B sido by all of bis colleagues, who vvero "i Wellington, and by a : numerous circle of friends, amongst them General Godley and other officers of the General Staff, Mr. P. Herdman left by th« south-bound steamer last night for Christ-' churoh. lie proposed to visit tho gaol at Lyttelton, and tho new gaol for women at Addington, and he will attend a dinner given by tho Christchurch branch of tho Civil Service Association on Saturday evening, leaving for Wellington by the steamer tho same night. Tho Hon. F. M. B. Fishor, Minister for Customs and Marine, is going to Auckland some tiiilo next week, leaving Wellington probably on Tuesday, in timo to be present when the Governor arrives at Auckland. Mr. Fisher will remain in the northern city for a few days. Tho Hon. H. I). Bell, Minister for Internal Affairs, will return to Wellington from Dunedin to-morrow morning. Vioe-Admiral IIO6S, of tho United States Navy, left Wellington for Sydney by tho Moeraki yesterday. Mr. I\ G. Matthews, private secretary to the Hon. James Allen, left with his chief by the Moeraki last evening. Prior to his departure Mr.. Matthcws's colleagues in tho secretarial service met, to bid him good-bye, to drink his health, and to wish him a good time in tho Old Land. Mr. Downs Johnstone, principal and musical director of the Austral Orchestral College, Sydney, and director of the Sydney Comedy Club, arrived from Sydney on Wednesday, and left again lor Sydney last evening. Mr. Johnstone has as liis partner Mr. Alfred Hill, formerly of Wellington, who is now firmly established in t'ha New South Wales capital, and is doing splendid work as conductor of the Sydney Orchestra Society, and in other capacities in connection with the Austral College. Mr. Johnstone states that Mr. Hill mil be leaving Sydney for "Wellington on Saturday, to 6pend tho Christmas holidays with his relatives here. Tho Hon. W. Fraser, Minister for Public Works, leaves Wellington on Tuesday for Napier. He will remain .in and about Napior on Wednesday, and will return to Wellington on Thursday. Mr. Michael J. Beardon.has been appointed secretary of the Wellington district Council of the United Labour Party, vice Mr. F. Reyling, deceased. In the interregnum Mr. W. C. Noot has been, attending- to the duties of secretary. Mr. H. W. Pilcher, of the. staff of the United Insurance Company, has been promoted to the Auckland office of that company. Sir John Findlay was a passenger to Sydney by the Moeraki yesterday. Dr. Steele was a passenger by the 6ame vessel. The Hev. Mr. Sago and the Eov. Mr. Thompson were passengers by the Moeraki for Sydney yesterday. A Christchurch Press Association telogram states that Mr. P. J. Carman, 1 who has retired en superannuation from tho ■Inspection of Machinery Department, and who for several years has been inspector of machinery in Christchurch, was yesterday the recipient of presentations on behalf of the local users of steam, and on behalf of his fellow officers in the Department. Captain Marciel presented Mr. Carman with a lounge cllair and purse of sovereigns on behalf of the users of steam, and Mr. Ii- Duncan, on behalf of tho captains and fellow offioera in the Department, presented him with a gold watch, suitably inscribed, and for Mrs. Carman a jewel case. Eulogistic references to the tactful manner in which Mr. Carman had discharged his duties were mode by Captain Marciel, Mr. John Anderson, and others, 1 . Mr. J.
