WHY IT COLLAPSED.
STAGING AT TE ARO BATHS. Last Saturday's accident at Te Aro baths, whereby people were thrown into the water upon .the collapse of a staging, was referred to at the City Council meeting last night. '■. \ The Baths Committee reported that they had instructed the custodian of the baths to prohibit the erection of platforms, stagings, etc., unless the authority of the town clerk had been obtained. The committee desired to make it clear that tho platform which collapsed at the To Aro baths on Saturday last was not erected bv the oounoiTs employees. Councillor Fletcher remarked that ho would like to have some explanation as to who was responsible. There' might have been a diro calamity. He understood that the staging had been erected without permission, and was not inspected, what was the caretaker doing? ■ Several other councillors expressed strong disapproval of the action of the caretaker in allowy* the Swimming_ Association to erect the staging, without inspection, and considered that ho should be reprimanded. .;•..... n ■ Councillor Frost said that the Mt.ivr was much regretted by tho Reserves Com. mittee, and they were taking steps to prevent a incurrence
