(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) —■ p . PARCEL OF GLOVES. , THE INCORRECT DECLARATION. . Auckland, December, 10. At the Police Court, Frank Randall, of Rendall, Ltd., was fined ,£SO for an incorrect declaration as to tho value of a parcel of gloves imported through the post office, he representing the value at i! 26 175., instead of ,£SO Ids. 6d. Defendant explained that tho error arose through his having handed in, in mistake, an invoice for a similar parcel of floods previously passed. Tho magistrate accepted the explanation, but remarked that the revenue must be protected. He imposed half the penalty provided.
THE SOUTHLAND SHOW. I nvercargill, December 10., • Beautiful weather prevailed for the Southland Metropolitan Show, and thero was a large attendance for the first day. The quality of the stock was well' up to show standard, though the wool Bhowed the effects of the past wet season. The entries in most of the classes.were large, and competition keen. The following were the principal prize-takers:—Short-horns: D. Murray (Clydevale); P. Campbell (Wyndham). Ayrshires: Rankm Bros. (Underwood). ■ Holsteins: N. Leighton (Glenham)j J. Wylie (Edendale). Border Leicesters: T. S. Little (Ngapara); J. M'Kerchar (Woodlands). English Leicesters: J. M'Kerchar; Jas. Butler, and T. S. Little. Romney Marsh: W. C. Ladbrook (Gore); W. Telford (Waiwera); T. L. Barnhill (Castlerock). Lincolns: T. S. Little and J. B. Sutton (Thornbury). Shropshire Downs: Thos. Evans (Longi bush), arid Jas. Swale (Lime Hills). Fat sheep: Alfred Horne (Morton Mains); W. Kennedy (Otautau); C. Brice (Rinley). Christchurch scooped the pool in the pig classes.
TO MR, CRAIGIE, M.P. Timaru, December 10. . At a largely-attended meeting at the Choral Hall to-nighj: Mr. Jas. Craigie, M.P., was presented with a handsome album of South Canterbury photographs and drawings, and a cheque for J£2oo, in. recognition of his splendid services to the borough'during his ten years of occupancy of the mayor's chair. A handsome gold bangle, set with diamonds, was also presented to Mrs. Craigie. Mr. Craigie, when the project was mooted, said that he wonld devote any.such gift of money to the Art Gallery, and this will be done. The presentation was made by Mr. Roht. Bowie, one of" the oldest business men here. A TRAM ANNIVERSARY. Wanganui, December 10. To-day is the fourth anniversary of'the installation of the trams at Wanganui. During that period 5,751,349 passengers were carried, 783,500 car miles ran, a=d the revenue amounted to £40,492. ATTACKING LETTER-BOXES. Auckland, December 13. A young man named Louis. Arthui Sucking, 22 years of age, a farm cadet, was drowned in the Motueka River at Whakarewa last evening while bathing. ARM CAUGHT IN BELT. Dannevirke, December 10. ' A. youth, Jeffrev Herman, an apprentice in Colletfs Foundry, while putting dressing on the belt of a machine, had his right arm taken round a pulley. His elbow was dislocated and the arm broke near the shoulder. MORE OIL-BORING. ... Dannevirke, December 10. AGAIN THE PEA RIFLE. I nvercargill, December 9. .- A'youth named Sydney Glover, of Taramoa, left a loaded pea rifle in a barn, and while he was closing the door the charge exploded and the bullet Xpf the expanding type) passed through his abdomen, and lodged in his.liver. His condition is dangerous. ~ A TERRIBLE ACT. Auckland, December 10. * Margaretta Langsford, agedj.4, wife of Lane Langsford, residing at. Birkenhead, committed suicide last night. She stood facing a mirror with her baby in her arms and inflicted a fatal wound. She then carried her child in her arms to .her mother's house next door, and fell into •her mother's arms and died a-iew minutes later. She had been- strange in her behaviour for some time. . ,' .
