(By Telegraph.—Preßa Association.) WAREHOUSE IN FLAMES. SERIOUS DAMAGE TO STOCK. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) New Plymouth, December 9. Just before midnight on Saturday fir# broke out in Archibald Clark and Sons' warehouse.. It had a good hold when it was discovered, and the upper story was gutted before the ilames were suppressed. J. H. Cock and Company's premises in tho same building were saved with difficulty, but the stock was much damaged. Tho building, which is the property of Cock and Company, was insured for .£I7OO in the London, Liverpool, and Globe, and Cock's stock' for .£3400 in the same office. The loss 13 about covered by insurance. Claris stock was' insured for about JEGOOO in the New Zealand and South British, and the loss is about .£2OOO in. excess. The fire started in a lean-to over a loading platform, and passed up the lift well into the upper story. The circumstances are suspicious. Two ■firemen were injured while fighting tho fkmea. FRUIT BY POST. Hastings, December 9. At a meeting of the Hawke's Bay Fruit Growers' Association on Saturday,, a letter was received from the Director of Orchards covering a copy of the regulations providing for the carriage of fruit by post, and asking whether the association is prepared to receive orders and see that th§ fruit was promptly dispatched. The association .resolved not to take the responsibility, but individual members agreed to formulate a scheme of their own and to appoint a special secretary to attend to tne prompt dispatch of orders so r.eceived. CONTROL OF ROTO ROA. Auckland, December 9. The Hon. A. L. Herdman visited Roto Roa and Pakatoa Islands Inebriates' Homes on Saturday. He expressed the opinion that the situation is ideal, and the conduct by the Salvation Army left but little to' be desired, while as to complaint's there were none. Regarding control' of the homes, he said he was not quite certain what powers the Government held, or whether the institution will remain under the administration of the Army or be taken oyer by the State. On his return to Wellington he would make a statement on the whole subject. TIMARU STRIKE OVER. [ Timaru, December 9. ; Mass meetings of workers, followed by a conference, were held for hours, and early this afternoon an announcement was made that the men would resume ■ work, by order of. the federation. December !)• The Dumgree Estate, Awatere. of 12,500 ■ acres, subdivided into fourteen blocks, was auctioned here before a large attendance. Twelve seotions were sold in areas from 28 to 650 acres at prices from'.£s to .£22 per acre, and all to local buyers. SAFE BLOWN OPEN. Napier, December 9. Some time between Saturday night, and 7.30 this morning the. safe of J. Boyce, tailor, was blown open with dynamite, and all the available cash taken, the cheques being left. The safe was earned from the front shop to a rear room and surrounded with rolls of tweed,'which wjere much damaged by the' explosion. The safe was completely'wrecked. Boyce cannot yet state how much was taken. MURDER OF AN INFANT. Dunedin, December 9... An inquest was held this morning; on the inknt's : remain's'which! deposited on the reclaimed land by the suction dredge on December 2. According to the medical evidence the child was fullv. developed, had been born alive, and Jiad met its death by violence. The coroner (Mr. Graham) returned a verdict of wilful murder against some person or persons unknown, and instructed the police to make inquiries. It appears the child was born about ten weeks ago. ■ CARRIED OUT BY CURRENT. ' Napier, December 9. William Cooper, aged about 25, a single man, was drowned while bathing in the Tuki Tuki.Eiver at Clive yesterday. He got into deep water, and being unable to swim was carried out to sea by the current., ■ 's. • ~. A message;from Hastings states that the body was recovered to-day. ■ Cooper was unablo to swim, but entered_ the river with wings where the water is jfourteeu feet deep. The wings got adrift, and Cooper sank. FAST MOTORING & THE SEQUEL. Timaru, December 9. . At the adjourned inquest on Jarne! Esler, the victim of the motor-car accident last Tuesday, evidence was giver that Esler was travelling too fast to takf. the corners with safety.. When the brak< was put on one of the tyres burst and the car capsized,. Esler being underneathwith the weight of the car on his should, ers. He was then just breathing. A ver-. diet of accidental death was -returned. NEW BRIGIDINE CONVENT. Pahiatua, December 9. As briefly mentioned yesterday the new Pahiatua Convent was opened yesterday afternoon by the Rev. Dean O'Shea, j'ear General and Administrator of the Archdiocese of Wellington. There was a large gathering of the public and many visiting priests. The building is for the use of the Brigidine Sisters, a teaching order. The collection amounted to .£IOO. The -building cost .£I4OO. Father T. M'Kenna, the parish priest, was highly complimented on the result of his efforts. MOTOR OMNIBUS SERVICE. Hastings, December 9. The Hastings Motor Omnibus Company successfully inaugurated its Frimley-HaBV ings-Havelock service on Saturday. NORWEGIAN SAILOR DROWNED. Nelson, December 9. The body of a seaman named ICaspar Anderson "was found floating in the harbour this afternoon. Deceased was a member of the crew of the scow Southern Isles, and had been missing for some days. He was a native of Norway, and about 30 years of age. THE "BURST" OF A GOLF BALL. Christchurch, December 9. A oliild of Mr. Melling, caretaker of the Shirley golf links, was to-day peeling the outer case of' a golf ball, and got downto the centre, when'it burst, and discharged some semi-solid' substance into tho right eye, destroying the sight. GREATER AUCKLAND.. Auckland, December 9. The poll of the municipal electors of Rirnell Borough, which was taken _ today, on the Greater Auckland question, resulted in the proposal to amalgamate with the city being carried by a majority of 29S votes,. 733 voting for and 435 against
