Alderman Cocks has been elected Lord Mayor, seouring fifteen votes to tho retiring Lord Mayor's nine. Tho retiring Lord Mayor, Alderman Clarke, was only eight months in office. In. responding to the toast of his health after Mr. Cocks had been elected, he (Alderman Clarke) said his ambition was to fill the office for the full term. He believed ho would have secured tho coveted honour if outside influence hud not been used against him. He much regretted that outside influence could be so unfair, all because he had shown backbone. Tho Lord Mayor's salary has been fixed at <£1500.
