THE HON. JAMES ALLEN.
■V'-V':. • fr- - ' HIS VISIT TO ENGLAND. : ■ , :(By./Me^raph.—Press Association.) ■ Dunedin, December 9, The Hon. James Allen was accorded a •farewell by tho citizens of Dunedin to-day on the uocasion of his departure for London. Eulogistic speeches were delivered • by the' Mayor (Mr. Wilson), the Hon., T. Fergus, Mr. J. Londgun (president of the Chamber of Commerce), and Major Ritchie. ' ; ' In tho course of his reply, Mr. Allen said he was being.sent to the old country, and believed he was with ihe approval and endorsement of the people of ; New Zealand. He thought a man coming into office should, go to the great , money market of the world to become acquainted with, matters on the spot. He ■pas proiid it' was given to him to go .to England at such an opportune moment, and to hear what, they had to saj; on the great questions of the day, especially the question of defence. He was glad of the opportunity to go to England for another reason. There were those who had been speaking of us in a slighting and degrading, tone, and he thought it was time someone should : say that what was being published about us was not true.
