MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Our Special Correspondent.) " Masterton, December 5. A two-storeyed residence .at the rear of the Club Hotel was gutted by fire at an early liour this morning. The building was used.as lodgings by the staff.of the Club Hotel,-who had been detained at a banquet. The cause of the fire is a mystery. The whole of the furniture was destroyed, and the men lost their belongings. The.building was owned by Mr. H. Gray, and was very old. The insurances, if any, are not ascertainable. There has been, a keen demand for business premises in Masterton of late, and at the present time there- is hardly an empty shop, in the town. ■ A good deal of interest has been aroused in consequence of the resignation of a sister nurse at the Masterton Hospital. Mr. Arthur Paape, organiser • for the Sports' Protection League, "was_ in- Masterton to-day. He' intends visiting the district in January to endeavour to iform a local branch of the league.. Mr. Young, Government Poultry Expert, is delivering a series of lectures in the Wairarapa this week, under the'auspices of the Farmers' Union.
