WORK BEING STOPPED.
ON SOUTH ISLAND MAIN TRUNK.
Shortly before Christmas work on the South Island Main Trunk line at Parnassus, North Canterbury, will be stopped. : The Hon. W. Eraser (Minister for Public Works) 6aid yesterday .to a Dominion reporter that there'was nothing new in this intimation, aa he had mentioned this line in-the House of "Representatives as among those of which construction was to be discontinued for the present. He had Baid then that the line would be constructed only foE&a'. certain , distancejil'to'the meantime, and that if it was to be proceeded with torEaikoura,. the Government should buy the-land along .the route before the-line was -laid, ••if-, the land ;was ; such as ; to be greatly improved in value lyr the 'building of the'line.
