ENGLAND REVISITED.
THE CHURCH AND SOCIAL WORK. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Christchurch, December 3. The Rev. W. Dunkley, who has been visiting: England 'after thirty .< years'," abser.ee from the old country, returned to Christehurch to-day. In the course of an interview, Mr. Duukley referred to the white slave traffic, which formed the .subject of inquiries. while he was in Eugr land. The Church, he said, was quite awake to the. vast danger involved, and was taking a prominent part in the present movement to stamp out this social blot. The Church generally was mora alive to-day than it had ever been in tho past, and was doing her share in the social work for the uplifting of the masses now being carried on. , r ' , Eeferring to Labour matters. Mr. Dunkley said the recent strikes created a very real feeling of unrest. He heard a pro. minent Labour leader say that in the past capital had been cruel, in the future Labour would be cruel.' ' In.the provinces and country districts he was much struck by the lack on the part of the workers of tho pleasant things of lcfe, though he believed that on the whole tho .condition of tho wage-earners had improved considerably during recent rears. Education was now more general, and the spread of education was not'm any way causing interference with the work of the Church.
