OVERDUE MAGNANIMITY.
(To. the Editor.)
Sir,—Tour New Plymouth correspondent lauds Mr. Herdman and the Government for the appointment , of Mr. Weston, a consistent supporter of the Seddon-Ward Administration, as Crown Prosecutor. This, as claimed, may possibly be commendable, and accepted as evidence of Ministers' departure from the "spoils to the victors" policy of their predecessors. But* after all, how far should• this Utopian policy be carried ? Surely Ministerial appointments should not be extended to opponents unless their qualifications are higher, or at least equal. If such is the reasonable rule, will Ministers deny that | for certain.appointments which they have made, men, of higher ability and repute .were to be found in the Reform ranks, and that to pass such over in favour of those selected, was to markedly belittle their own friends?—l am, etc.,' NGAIO. November 80.
