Negotiations are proceeding with. ; the Imperial authorities regarding the proposal that Norfolk Wand shonld be taken under the jurisdiction of tho Commonwealth, No finality has been reached, (Rec. December 2, 9iSO p.m.) \ Melbourne, December 2. The Prime Minister, Mr. Fisher, in referring to the report regarding Norfolk Island, said:—"Wβ shall probably take it, but it will be as a duty and not as a good thing. The. Imperial Government is not keen, so far aa I know, either to. retain or part with it. The Commonwealth has onough to do at home, but must face ite duties in the Pacific. I am not in favour of spsoial efforts to extend Commonwealth, oontrol in the. Pacific, but Australia dees not desire to .have-Other people crowding round her in the Pacific. That would ba no joke." Norfolk Island is 900 miles east-north' east of Sydney. It has an area oJ fifteen square miles and a population of about ■a thousand.. Tho island is at present un-. der the administration of New South! Wales. It is a station of tho Pacific Cable Board.
