Coard, 1. LAWN TENNIS. . The second animal tournament of the Public Servico started at the Newtown Club's courts.yesterday morning, but was not oompleted. Remarkably ■ good progi'ess was, however, made, as only U of the 92 matohes down for decision remain to be played. As very few games were got.off botween 8 and 9 a.m. (that was quite expected), and two valuable hours were lost later in the morning owing to heavy rain making the courts unplayable, it will be.seen that the big average of 23 games per court would easily have been managed had the weather only held good. The Management Committee tenders its hearty thanks to the Newtown Lawn Tennis Club for its invaluable assistance in making, the tournament a success; to the ladies for preparing and serving aftornoon tea j also to the gentlemen who so •kindly and unselfishly carried out the onerous duties of umpiring. In this direction, Messrs. C. T. Andrew, R. Bauchop, W. L. Dunn, A. M. Gill, F. S. Harding, B. F Kelly, Eric Reeves, and C. William's were especially helpful. Mr. N J. R. M'Clune (Education Department) carried out the secretarial duties with a. great deal of credit, and has worked unceasingly since the arrangements were initiated. He was supported by three able young men in Messrs. A. M. Gill, T. H. Jones, and B. W. Millier, with Mr. E. Y. Redward as referee.
The only completed event was the ladies' singles, in which Miss Buctan (Post and Telegraph) Department) played consistently throughout. .Miss Warren (Native Department) was very solid on the other half of the draw, nnd the final between these two girls produced a great finish. ' Five matches remain to be played in the men's singles, and three in the doubles. The outstanding feature of both events ; was ' tho , very fine tennis of young 'Eric Beeves (Public Trust Office), Power,(N.Z.B.) was also in capital form, and must have a big say in with singles and doubles. Ho has improved out of sight. 0. :W. Bamfield (Public Trust, Office) had a long run of he should be in the winning double with Reeves. Tho latter has a stiff task set him in the singles, and even if he reaches the final (J. & Bridges on the S3 mark is a dangerous opponent) Beeves will have to fnce either Power or I". AVilliams (Post Office), the latter of whom is the "dark horse" of the tournament, nnd boat tho handicappers badly. C. Williams (Government Life) and N. E. Smellie (Public Worts) were chief among the other younger players to distinguish themselves. The actual results are as follow (the handicaps bD ; ng shown in parentheses) :— .
