Excellent racing, but under wretched conditions, was seen at Feilding on Saturday. Heavy rain fell on Friday, and up till two p.m. on Saturday, and it lert the course practically under water. The principal event was the Feilding Stakes, which went to the favourite—the Waikanae-bred Peronilla—who was soon, in front, and was not headed again. There was some excitement at the bottom of the straight when Vibration was seen to be up' with the filly, and Emerson, on the latter, was plainly uncomfortable for a few seconds. Probably ho hail eased her, and the heavy going had stopped her too quickly on ham. However, she was got going again, and won nicely at the fin ; sh, though doing her best. Crown Pearl might have won the Flying Handicap had it not been for the heavy going, and he should be seen to better advantage to-day.
Despite the scratching of ten horses, there were still some sixteen runners left' in the Aorangi Trial Plato. The Wairarapa gelding Otter was a better favourite than The Dodger. The latter won nicely after being in the van. the whole way. Gazalie, who now races in the colours of Mr. C. Kingston, finished very fast, and got second, with Rosalys third. Diyinia, after breaking through the tapes twice, was left at the post.
Peroneal 'was a much better favourite than Crown Pearl in the Flying Handicap, but tho little mare maatfuo showing at all in. the mud, and was out of a place at the finish.. Lady Volga and Crown Pearl were in charge till the straight was reached, when the mare cried enough. Crown Pearl then came on alone, but, over the last bit, W. Bell brought Rangiatua along with a rush, which Crown Pearl was unable to withstand. Obligant was a neck away clear of Lady Volga. Labour Day ran badly, and was in the rear tho whole way. The scratching pen was freely used in the St. Andrew's Handicap, amongst those withdrawn, being Brown Owl. Manawaka&a was favourite, but, contrary to expectations, he made no showing at all. At the start Patriotic jumped out clear of the field, but, at the end of , half a mile, Deeley steadied him, and Sir Solo, with Master Laddo, took up'the running just clear of Routine and Bonny Boy. With a mile covered, Patriotic was in trouble, and Odessa moved up. At the three furlongs Mira ran up to the leaders, and led into the straight, alongside the pair. Ngatimaru, who had been, in tho rear the whole way, also put in a claim, while Odessa moved up on the rails. A keen finish saw Mira lost the longest, and win by a head, with Sir Solo a aeck in front or Ngatimaru, Odessa being the next to finish. The winner was received with loud cheering as ho returned to scale. Ho is owned by Mr. F. Hall, of Gisborne, whoso horses hare been enjoying a great run in Auckland of late. He is trained by J. W. Lowe at Trentham, who also has Obligant—another of Mr. Hall's horses— hi his stable.
Silver Cluso toiiched a very short price in the Spring Hurdles, which he won decisively. Kin? Try and Koran were i"n the load for the first circuit, when the former fell back. Half a mile from home, L«o----lanter hended Koran, and ran round the bend clear of everything. As they entered the straight, Silver Chise put in a run, awl smothered everything, winning very easily. Cornelian, was third. Several of the- runners were well supported in the Hack Hurdles, which went to Chief marshal, one of H. Hickey's Hastings team. The winner had a great reputation, but it was not known how he would act in the mud. Timothy led over the first jump, but Moahau was soon out in front, and was not headed till the second fence from home, when Mingot took charge. The last-named" made a faulty jump at the last fence, and Chief Marshai, enminpr fast, headed him, and won easily by about three lengths. Bercola finished fast, Hβ n success nvw .fftuoea, The viAss si Mastet St<(ad .waa
fined £h for ropea/tedly breaking through tho barrier. ' ■ On, all form tho Stakes appeared to bo tho best of good things for Porouilla, and so it proved, though tho filly was kicked right out at tho Finish to keep clear of Expect, Nightwatch, and Vibration, who were all together as'tho post was reached. From a splendid start, Peronilla, on tho outside, was the quickest to get going, and she soon put a break of five lengths on tho field. Aightiratchi got out on terras with the others, but ho could not act in the mud, and was last at the end of a furlong. At tho threo furlonra post Vibration wont out to reduce the lead of Poronilla, and, at tho distance, lie had her doing her best. In the straight Expect came through fast on the Tails, but he could not roach Peronilla, who won by two lengths and a half. Nightwatch also camo fast in tho straight, and boat Vibration for third place. Vocation finished fast, and was alongside Vibration as they reached the post. Tho winner's performance was a good one, and had the going been better sho would probably havo won easier. Emerson rode her at Gst. 121b., or 41b. overweight. The scratching,'pen was freely used in tho Kiwdtea Welter Handicap, thirteen of the acceptors being struck out. A really good start was effected. Running out of the straight Waipaku and Imagination were together in front, and, before threo furlongs had been covored. the leaders had a .great break on the field. Matlow and Rill were at tho head of the others, with Otahu a long way back last. Round the turn Rill and Matlow improved their positions, while Kilostori was corning fast. Once fairly in the straight Matlow threw out a strong challenge, but could not quite reach Imagination, who won all out by a length. Rill and Kilosteri were close up, tho last to finish being Comedian, Waipalm, and San Lass. The Fitzroy Hack Flying produced a nice field of sixteen runners. When the tapes flew up St. Eees jumped smartly out, but Eocene quickly got to tho front and 1«1 until entering , the straight, with Semaphore and Lady Louisa next. Semaphore got to the front half-way down tho running, , and won'by half a length from Lady Louisa.
