Boring operations in connection with the Mangaona Oilwells, Ltd., were commenced to-day. _ The bore is being put down on a portion of the property of Mr. P...White, mPa Valley. The company baa options,over about 20,000 acres, extending southtowards Masterton. The site.for. the first, bore was selected by two experts from America—Messrs. Hermann and'Weger., They : have had special bor- ' injj apparatus of _ their \own design' manufactured, in'.Napier,'.and "they expect to reach a depth of 2000 feet within' two months:; ~ To-day the' bore, though impeded by a log, penetrated to a depth of about' 40; feet, and the machinery Ton very smoothly. •' Most of tho capital in the company is taken "up in the district. : 'This afternoon Mr.: G. E. Sykes, M.P., in the presence of several hundred people, officially declared', the works open, and expressed a hope that oil in payable quantities would be secured at an early date.
