HOW THE PEOPLE VOTED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Rec. November 27, 9.25 p.m.) Washington, November 27. The complete returns of tho popular vote in the Presidential election have been compiled. The figures are as follow :— Dr. Woodrow Wilson. (Democrat) 6,156,748 Mr. Roosevelt (Progressive) 3,928,140 Mr. Taft (Republican) 3,376,422 Mr. Eugene Debs (Socialist) ... 673,783 Tho vote for the Socialist candidate is incomplete. jMr. Taft proposes to conduct an active campaign for the reorganisation of the Republican party. He does not intend to stand again as the party's Presidential candidate. There is, strictly speaking, no popular vote for the President of the United States; the people vote for electors, and those chosen, in each State meet therein and vote for the candidates for President and Vice-President. The popular vote in the 1908 election was distributed as follows i-Mr. Taft (Rep.), 7,678,908; Mr. Bryan (Dem.), 6,409,104; Mr. Debs (Soc.j, 420,793; Mr. Chapin (Progressive), 253,840; Mr. Watson (People's party), 29,100; Mr. Gilhaus (Socialist-Labour party), 13,825; Mr. Hisgen (Independence), 82,872. The vote for Dr. Wilson this year was the smallest polled for a successful candidate since the election of Mr. Grover Cleveland in 1892.
