a (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) Wanganui, November 20. The amalgamation of the .boroughs of Wanganui and Wanganui East—the proposal for which was carried at last week's poll—will take effect' almost at once, and, provided no red tape difficulties arise, the' town of Wanganui will include areas on both sides of the river on and after, next New Year's Day. Both councils met in conference last evening, and decided to apply for an Order-in-Council to. give effect to tho above.' During the past three years St. John's Hill, Aramolio, Druietown, and Wanganui East have come into tho borough, and, though the town district of Gonville still stands out, it is only a question of time when it, too, will amalgamate. The approaching chance will have an appreciable effect on the population of the borough, which will now bo raised to about 15,000. ~ The foundation stone of the new. St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, at the corner of Nixon and Guyton Streets, was laidthis afternoon by Mrs. W. J. Treadwell, an eloquent address being delivered by Professor Hewitson, principal of Knox College, Dunedin. The new church will he a commodious and handsome structure in brick, with Oamaru stone facings, and will occupy a commanding position.
