EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Wellington Education Board was held yestcruuy. Members present were Mr. 11. Lee (chairman), Messrs. J'. IvebbeU, A. \V. llogg, Allan, J. G. W. Aitken, W. C. Bucnuuan, M.P., and W.H. Field. „ I Leave of absence was grauted to Mr. Ji. Freeman. Mr. llogg moved, and Mr. Allan seconded, that the resignation of Mr. A. 11. Vile from the board be accepted with regret. Mr. Hogg also embodied in his motion a clause to tile effect that a letter, expressing the board's appreciation of his services, be sent to Mr. Vile, lie motion was carried. The date of the election of Mr. Vile's successor was tad for January 11. The Education Department recommended the board to discontinue the grant of free books and allowances, for school libraries.—Approved. On the Department's recommendation, tho board decided to defer tho Brant tor wood-work and cookery rooms at Johlisonville, until a .train servico more suitable lor carrying tho children of neighbouring schools is arranged. . Information regarding agricultural high schools was received from tho Departments of Public Instruction in New South Wales and Victoria. The statement of accounts showed that tho debit balance from October 2G until November 22 was £765 9s. . The debit figure for the previous month was .£2570 Bs. sd. A letter from tho Petone Borough Council stated that tho council were agreeable to tlie proposal of tho board that secondary pupils should be accommodated in the Technical School building, on condition that the neoossary accommodation was provided, and with a further provision that a proper agreement was drawn up. Consideration of the matter was left _ in the hands of the chairman, Mr. Fleming, and tho secretary. The board was not prepared to grant a request from Pongatoa for the "enlargement of the'infant room, but considered, at the same time, that somo improvements might 1m effected, ■ In connection with the negotiations between the Education Board and the Technical School Board, a deputation, consisting of tho managers of the Wellington Technical School and tho directors, attended a meeting of the Works Committee, and decided to invito the co-operation of the board in a renewed effort'to obtain a suitablo sito~ for the erection of-a new Technical School.—The matter was discussed in committee. : \ Grants as follow were authorised:— Mangarama, concrete floors to sheds; To Aro- (Main), division gate, repairs, steps, netting frames, etc. ;TeAro (Infant), topdressing of present asphalt; Newtown, painting interior of school-(exterior to bo done at end of 1913); Island Bay, window blinds; Newtown, chimney-pots; Newman, re-flashing vents, spouting, sheds; Eketahuna, improvements to desks; Boseneath.vnew spouting; Pongaroa, ventilation -of south class-room; Petone, papering class-room, Price's Building; Lan»downe, subsidy, half-cost- outbuildings; Plimmerton, shutters for sheds;.Ngaturi, ; now tiificesj Pongaroa, grounds improvenicnt (subsidy); Scarborough, subsidy; Upper Hutt, subsidy. The following grants were deferred:— Horoeka, ground improvements (committee to give more definite information); Te Aro,'repairs, .etc; (committee to supply additional, information); Mitchelltowu, proposal -,tp' erect addition. . • •• ( Library, subsidies; were granted as follow :—Scarborough, .£3 10s.; Ofaki, £2 Bs. 3d. The following report by the Committee of Advice was adopted :-Tho Hawke's Bay Board intimated acceptance of the offer made' by the board, that about ten uncertificated teachers selected from that district for-special training be admitted to the Training College for tho summer course iii February,.with those from this district.. That the board.refer to the chief inspector and principal, .with a view to giving'effect to it, the suggestion .of the Wanganui.Education Board with rcs.pect to probationers. and pupil teachers enter the Training College, that boards should be required to furnish to tho Committee, .of Advice. _ not ; merely ■testimony' of a. general : -kind, regarding -completion of service .and. ability • to "t&oB, but also, iii detail, .tcgatding capacity for 1 study, 'habits' respect .' to punctuality,' neatness' and order, 1 ' and power to 1 secure control _aiid; attention.' While the committee passed no' resolution regarding this criticism oi the powers of control 1 possessed by students on leaving the committee ventured tho opinion .that headmasters, and even perhaps, some inspectors; arc inclined to expect too much, from young teachers of such limited experience as'young trainees just leaving the Training College possess.
