HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of tlie Hutt Borough Council was held last evening, those present being: The Mayor (Mr. E. P. Bunny), and Councillors Ball, Roots, Hodgins, Clendon, Hobbs, and Dawson. Mr. Footo complained that a licensed vehicle driver had refused to take' passengers 011 a recent occasion, when he was not pressed for room. It was decided to inform Mr. Footo that the driver bad been before tho council, and had produced evidenco showing that ho was engaged at the time.

Messrs. O. and R. Beere, on bahalf of Mr. R. Keene, wrote stating that they were desirous of having water laid 011 to two houses in Marsden Street.—Dccided, that the applicant be informed that itWould cost .-£220 to put a main down, but, if he chose to pay the cost of a temporary pipe, tho council would do the work. In a further communication regarding the payment of ,£770 by certain members »f ths Knight Syndicate, Messrs. O. and R. Beere pointed out that they were instructed to state that the syndicate did not acknowledge the liability, and suggested that tho matter l)e held over pending a Court decision regarding tho To Momi Estate. After perusing tliO' bond, the Mayor said that there was no getting away from payment. The matter was held over, as suggested by Messrs. Beere. The Wellington City Council reported that tliey would not object to the proposed road from Waiwetu Bridge to Lowry Bay, tho road going along the pip© line, prodded that the pipes were covered at least Eft. Gin. and in accord with tho authorities concerned.—Received.

Mr. W. Coward offered his services in London' to act on behalf of tho council In obtaining quotations, etc.—Received. It was resolved to 'Mr. London (who further asked if something could not lie done to relievo his property on the Hutt Road of stormwater) that the' cost was too great for the council to entertain the idea of a drain.

The, question of filling in the RotokaItahi Creek was left to the engineer to report on. / Councillor Dawson drew attention to what ho termed the "unbusinesslike methods" of the engineer, when ordering materials for various works. Ho submitted that tenders should 1)9 called for all material required. It was not businesslike to go round a clicjuo of merchant's in Wellington getting priccs. There were representatives of many firms in Wellington who were probably unknown to the engineer. ' The Mayor said that tho engineer's methods in tho past had been eminently (satisfactory, especially with tho centrifugal pump. After some - further ,discussion, Councillor Dawson gave notice to-move:'"That, in future, all material required by the council be tendered for."

The City Council v;rote stating that they did not feel disposed to erect an approach for t-lie convenience of residents in the

vicinity of tho eastern approach of the Hutfc pine britlce. Tho Public Trustee advised that tho loan required by the council (.£3500) would be negotiable, on tho usual terms. The terms were accepted.

On the motion of the Mayor, a special rato. of I'} of a penny in the wE on all ratepayable property, in the borough, to provido for interest and sinking fund, plus 10 per cent, on t.lic authorised loan of .£1270, the extension of waterworks, was struck. A special rate of G 1-33 of a penny in the £, covering a loan of -£2230 for drainage extension, was also struck. Tho ' question of assisting Fireman Fleet, who met with an accident on Labour Day. was held over. ' The report hy the engineer was read and adopted.
