After briefly explaining the "nature of the address he proposed to give, Mr. Howard enlarged upon some amusing experiences he had when engaged in pioneer work in the ■ Gippsland Forest. Among tho people he met there he selected a bush musician, a bush preacher, and a bush bride as characters that would interest the audience, and later he described an agnostic bridegroom. A fen - words of< encouragement were thrown out to young men with ambition, to become public speakers. _ Mr. Howard exhorted them not to be discouraged by a first few failures. His own first experience in addressing an audience had been an unhappy one. as after addressing the: opening words he was struck blind, d'iirab, and deaf in one act, and was glad to make off through a door that happened to have been left, open. He illustrated types that were to bo'avoided, and to do this he pictured an imaginary meeting addressed by two Homo missionaries with a vote of thanks' proposed by a tutor arid seconded by a layman. Finally, Mr. Howard save pictures of the Rev. J. G. Wonllev, Mark Twain, and the Rev. John M'Neill. The lecture throughout Has listened to with much interest, and at the close the lecturer was greeted with applause, which lasted some minutes.
