GENERAL GODLEY.
HIS VISIT TO AUSTRALIA. DEFENCE SCHEME: FAVOURABLE IMPRESSIONS. (Br Telegraph.—Press Association.) Invercargill, November 25. Major-General Godley arrived at the Bluff this afternoon from Melbourne. In an interview the General said he had been very pleased with his visit to tho Koyal Australian Military College, and was well satisfied with r the way in which the New Zealand cadets, sixteen in number, were being treated, and with the work they had to do, and the way in' which it was done, as well as the progress that was being made. "While in Melbourne he visited the cordito factory, the remount depot, and other Australian military institutions and factories. Ho had conferred with the Australian military authorities in Tegard to plans for co-operation in defence matters between the Dominion and Australia, and witnessed tho review by the GovernorGeneral of 18,000 .senior cadets. Commenting on tho display, General Godley said that he was very much struck with the efficiency of the organisation and administration, and the way in which this large number of cadets * was marshalled and assembled for review. He thought the boys on the whole were of very good physique, and were promising material for the Australian Territorial forces. They were all fully uniformed, armed, ■and equipped, and it was evident that the Australian authorities were sparing no expense to make the scheme of universal training a reality, and a complete success. No stone was being left unturned to ensure that all ranks were thoroughly armed and equipped, so that they would bo afforded every opportunity of performing military duties to tho best advantage. . . Arrangements were everywhere in progress for camps on a large scale, where brigades, and still larger assemblages of all arms, will go under canvas during the forthcoming summer. The General stated that everywhere in Australia the prospects of the scheme were most' flourishing and satisfactory.
General God ley will remain in Invercargill to-night, an<l inspect the Territorial forces, and to-morrow will proceed to Queenstown, thence as far as Clyde, and hack to Duncdin, whero he will stay fov a couple of days. He expects to reach Christchurch on Saturday night.
