NEGLECTED ISLANDS.
LETTER PROM NOUMEA. . A Noumea correspondent writes that active efforts are now being made in NeivCaledonia to attract an influx of tourists. For some years past the local press of Noumea, has been attempting, with poor success, to get the people of neighbouring territories to take an interest in New Caledonia, but tho Acting-Governor, Monsieur, Brunet, has now taken the matter in. hand, and has organised a syndicate which has -undertaken, among other things, to furnish the town of Noumea with comfortable hotels. Financial assistance and 00-operataon is being sought in Australia, and it is hoped that the pre-sent-good relations between the Commonwealth and the French oolony will be strengthened. In 1895 France stopped sending convicts to the. New archipelago, and it is stated that conditions in the group are now absolutely normal, and that full security prevails.
