MR. ROYD GARLICK'S APPOINTMENT
MINISTER REPLIES TO CRITICISM. A message from a Christchurch correspondent which was published recently in a local paper stated that an impression was abroad that the appointment of Mr. Royd Garlick as Director of Physical Training in primary schools, had been made through private influence. 'The correspondent described the method of appointment followed in Mr. Garlick's case as "hole and corner."
"It is pure nonsense," said the Hon. Jas. Allen, when the paragraph referred to was brought under his notice yesterday; "there, has not been a.particle of private influence or any other influence. I'consulted some medical men and others, and came.to the conclusion that Mr. Royd Garliok had been well trained the anatomical, physiological, and hygienic Eoint of view. I had an opportunity of aving him as one of the committee of advice, and he made a-very good impres-; siop there. There has been no' hole-and-corner business about it at all. The position was not advertised, because I did not see the use of advertising in England or elsewhere when there was a man ready to hand who appeared to mo to have the qualifications and to have the enthusiasm and ability to carry out the work. Advertising in England you ..don't know •wh ! at''ydti ,: wiirg'et,''very' , oftefa. 3C It is far better to get a man on the spot whose qualifications are known."
