Recent Australian and Japanese files to hand have contained references in regnrd to the placing of larger steamers in the Australian service bv the Nippon Yitseti Miisha Steamship Line. Tt b the intention of the board of directors to exlcnd the present service from.Japan to Australia to New Zealand. The present one. is maintained bv three steamers, under ■ the State subsidy of 400,000 yen. The steamers employed are the Yawata- Mara. Nikku Maru, and Kaisha Jlaru, each between 2000 and 3COO tons net. These vessels .moke trips every four-weeks. /I'lie proposed new service to New Zealand and Adelaide will, it is staled, be maintained by steamers of between SCCO and 6000 tons. The present arrangement of the line was thought, to be very unsatisfactory, and inadequate to keep pace with the progress of trade .between Japan and Australia, which has developed remarkably during tho past three years. The Union Company's training ship Dartford arrived at an anchorage in the stream at Wellington from Newcastle at 10.25 p.m. yesterday. This is the sailer's first appearance at Wellingtou after an absence of some years. The Dartford reported "All well." The Union Company's tug Tcrawkiti, Captain Watchlin, left port in search of the Dartford on Wednesday .evening, and anchored in Worser Bay until 2.45 .a.m. yesterday, when she proceeded to Cook Strait. A zig-zag course was made to Stephen Island, and signals exchanged. In consequence of information received from the lightboujekeener the Terawhiti was headed for Kapiti Mand, and at. 2 p.m. the Dartford was picked un W.N.W. of Mana Island. 52 miles.from Wellington. In a nu.irter of an hour the Terawhiti had the training ship in tow and under way. The weather was flue, with a light southerly wind, accompanied by a moderate s;a; All went well, and port was made as stated above. An unexpected arrival . at Lyttelton on Tnesdav was the brigantinc Rachel Cohen from Tasmania. The vessel, which was laden with hardwood, left OaU'.vood, Tasmania., a few days ago, and after reaching the New Zealand coast, experienced strong southerly winds, which carried her up to port in good stylo. The Rachel Cc hen'was towed into nort, and remained in the stream until Wednesday morning: when she was brought-to a berth at tho Galdstone Pier. Captain C. A. L. Nepmann is in- charge of the vessel. TheRachel Cohen is a wooden-brigantine of I7fl tons gross register, built at.' Manning River, New South Wales, in 1871. ■• The Mararoa will run an excursion trip from Lyttelton to Akaroa on Anniversary Day (December 16). The Maori will make a similar trip on Boxing Day. - According to the "New Zealand Herald" the Union Company's steamer Hauroto is to lay up at Auckland for,an indefinite period. .- • . r ' ■ High rates of freight• are at present, ruling for'grain cargoes from Pacific. The Union Company's chartered steamer Devon left Port Chalmers for Newcastle at ; 11.30 a.m. yesterday. She returns to Lyttelton, and Port Chalmers with coal. ' At 8.30 a.m. yesterday the Tyser liner Marere arrived at Wellington from London, via way ports, and berthed at Jer- ■ vois Quay to. complete, discharge.' The liner proceeds to Napier to commence loading for Home. The Marero will bo back .at Wellington about December 18. ' This will be her final port of departure for London. The pilot at Karamea . advised ' Messrs. Bannatyne and ' Co. yesterday that tho Defender was making good progress towards being refloated. She had been shifted 4CO feet, but it was anticipated that it- would take several tides yet before the vessel would be launched into the chan- ' nel. Messrs. Levin and Co'.'s coastal steamer Awahou left Wanganui last evening to load at Wcstport for Foxton. The Gertie is due in port from Foxton to-day.. She will then proceed to Westport. •Mapourika, s.s., arrived at Greymouth from Wellington, via way ports, at 11 a.m. yesterday. She was to have left on the ■ return trip at 10 p.m. • • The Union Company's intercolonial liner. Maunganui is due at Wellington from Melbourne, via. southern ports, about 6 a.m. to-day. Departure will be taken for Sydney direct at 5 p.m. On account of bad weather on the East Coast, the Tarawera lias been somewhat delayed. ' She is due in port from Napier this afternoon, and sails for south this . evening.
