MIXED BATHING.
— I,- , ON LTALL BAT BEACH. It is believed by a very great many people that tho City Council has latelyjnade a by-law prohibiting mixed bathing at Lyall Bay. The council have certainly made a by-law to regulate all kinds of bathing and bathers there, and the effect of the by-law may be to restrict mixed bathing somewhat, but it is not forbidden altogether. The by-law ■ empowers tho police and other responsible persons, to repress over boisterous spirits, and it provides also that a certain area may bo reserved for the exclusive use of women, and another area for the exclusivo use of men. Following are the two clauses affecting this point:— "No male over the age of eight years shall trespass upon any part of the beach or any dressing-shed or any enclosure set apart by.the council for the exclusive .use of females, and so indicated by public notice exhibited thereon, except for the purpose of Tendering assistance in case of accident." "No female shall trespass upon any part of tho beach or any dressingshed or any enclosure set apart by the council for the exclusive use of males, and so indicated by public notice exhibited thereon, except'for the purpose of rendering assistance in case of accident."
