Tho interstate lawn tennis championship meeting opened to-day, in dull weather, and with the courts soft. Tho chief interest was centred in the match between Dunlop and Brookes (Victoria) against Wright and A. B. Jones (Now South Wales). The latter pair were frequently brilliant, but their opponents were magnificent throughout, winning 6—3, G—o. Brookes's serving, volleying, aad overhead work won many games. Ho was drawing oft' the ground with more pace than usual. Brookes and Dunlop (Victoria) also beat ICidston and Anderson (Kew Soutli Wales) 6—4, 6-0. Lycett and Heath (Victoria) were below form, but won all their matches, beating Anderson and Kidston G—3, 3—6, 9—7, and Marsh and Metcalf (New Soutli Wales) 6—4, 7—5. O'Hara Wood and Campbell (Victoria) beat A. B. Jones and Wright 7—5, 4—6. B—6.8 —6. Wood did Borne romarkably fine work off tho Eround, and his bowling was splendid. In the men's open doubles, M<arsden and C Ballantyno beat Ollivier (New Zealand) and Ballantyne, 6—4, 6—2.
