LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Professors from the various university colleges in New Zealand will assemble in conference at 10.30 a.m. to-day for the purpose of discussing various questions relating to the work of the New Zealand University. Amongst the other matters tho conference will discuss the B.A. and B.Sc. degree courses, and will also take into consideration the question of a permanent constitution for the conference. The secretary of the Wellington Society for the Prevention of' Cruelty to Animals has issued to all those who take an interest dn the work invitations to attend the annual meeting, which is to take place on Wednesday evening next at 8 p.m. Tho secretary considers that most of the case 3: of cruelty to animals are due to ignorance. During the evening tho Hon. A. L. Herdnian will speak, and a lecturette will, .be delivered'by Mr. W. C. Quinnell, M.R.C.V.S., Lond. The meeting will be held in the Oddfellows' Hall, Lambton Quay. Tho Aiild Lang Syne Club, the members of which are ex-students of the Presbyterian Theological Hall, and now ministers of the Presbyterian Church, met at Godberis' on Friday evening. About forty members were present, and after tea speeches were made by now members, who wore welcomed by the president, and by one or two visitors. Absent members, chiefly in foreign lands, ware remembered, and greetings sent to them, as well as to tho professors. The club provides a scholarship for students preparing for tho ministry of the church. Tho president of tlie.elub this year is the Rev. A. 3. Asher (Napier), and for liext year tho Rev. W. Grant (Gisborno) was elected. It is expected that the Public Service Commissioner and the two assistant commissioners, who avo to be appointed (under.the Public Service Act passed last session) to control the Civil Service; will ■bo selected at a. meeting of Cabinet towards the end of this month, or early in December. Tho annual meeting of the Glasgow Umvoi'fiily Club of Now Zealand was hold yesterday in Godlier's, Cuba Ktroot. Tito Ilov. Alox. Whyte, 11.A„ 8.D., B.Sc, prcsidont, was m tho chair, Thcro was a largo attendance. Professor Drown and tho llov. Mr. Aitkcn, of Edinburgh, wcro cordially welcomed. A pleasant evening was spent with speech and song. The Rev. Mr. M'Ara, Moderator-elect of the General Assombly, was elected president for. tho ensuing; year, and tho Rev. R. Francis, Opotiki, was re-elected secretary. During tho late session of Parliament, tho Hon. A. L. llerdnian announced that ho was considering tho advisability of appointing a couplo of busines men to act aa advisers to tho Public Trustee, Mr. Herdman told a reporter yesterday that no step of this kind would bo taken until tho commission which is to be set up to inquire into tho working of the Public Trust Department had reported. Application forms and other papers required in connection with the administration of tho Military Pensions Act have not yet left the hands of the Government Printer, but are expected to bo ready in about a week. As soon as they are available, the papers will be issued by Mr. G. C. Facho (Commissioner of Pensions) to the area officers and area sergeant-majors, who are to act as examining officers under tho Military Pensions Aot, and will receive applications for pensions. Together with ■ the application forms and / other papers, posters setting forth the conditions upon which pensions may be obtained by veterans are to bo issued broadcast throughout tho Dominion. H.M.S. Cambrian, Captain J. Drummond, arrived at Wellington from Geelong, via Nelson, yesterday afternoon. On the run. across from the Australian port, th* vessel experienced rough weather, which moderated when she was nearing the New Zealand coast. Tho Cambrian averaged about 10 knots on tho journey. It is some considerable time since the Cambrian, was last in New Zealand waters. She was recommissioned at Colombo on September 16, 1911, ana proceeded thenco to Shanghai, China, where she remained for some months. Tho warship returned to Australia in Juno of this year. It is expected that H.M.S. Cambrian will leave Wellington for Auckland about November 30 or 31, arid she is duo at the northern port about December 1 or 2. ■ Ecgarding the question as to which local authority or local authorities is to control the now Hutt Road, a preliminary meeting of the representatives of the various local bodies was hold in the Town' Hall yesterday.
