(Before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M.) ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. John Whelan was charged with having attempted suicide on November 1.. -He pleaded guilty. " Sub-Inspector Sheohan said that Whelan Had been addicted to drink, and had attempted to poison .-himself. The defendant was ordered to pay Hospital and other expenses amounting to SA, and was, allowed time, in which-to get work' and" earn;the motiey. "Also a prohibition order was made 1 out against him. . , THEFT OF'AN OVERCOAT. A charge of having stolen an overcoat,, valued at £3 from one Edward O'Neill, was made against John. David' Speight. Speight strenuously protested that he knew nothing of his act, and that he had never in his life committed theft 'I 'remember nothing of it, your Worship, said he. "I don't know how I came to do it. In all my life I have nover been dishonest." His Worship: You say that you a »e not aware of' having stolen the coat? Accused: No, your Worship. I assure you I don't know how I could have done such a thing. Stealing is a thing I have never been addicted to. Cliief-Decteive Broberg: "I cannot agree altogether with what the accused says, your Worship. He has 34 convictions against him, and six of for theft." The Chief-Detective added that the man was at present undergoing a term of imprisonment for theft. Speight was convicted, and -sentenced to two months' imprisonment. He lias about two months yet .to serve on a former sentence. AUCKLAND SUPREME COURT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, November 16. In the Supreme Court a decree absolute was granted William Hussey against Elsa Clara Blake. Hussey is a farmer at Paerata, and was married on June 21, 1908, to respondent, whom he knew as Miss Bowles, and subsequently he learned that she was previously married to a man named Theophelus R. Blake. This was borne out by evidence now adduced.
