Africa, with the exception of 6500 men, will shortly bo withdrawn. It is 6tated that this is due to tho Union having adopted a defence soheme.. General Beyers, the South African commandant, who is at present in London, expressed surprise at the Imperial Government's sudden announcement, especially as the local defence scheme is only in its infancy.
