THE CITY MARKETS.
A' FAIRLY BUSY WEEK. The present week has been a fairly busy one at tho Blair and Allen Street markets, even though shipments from Sydney have been restricted; to small lots, duo, no doubt, to the high values ruling in the Now South Wales capital, and tho lateness of the 6easoii. Oranges realised from 17s. to "3s. per gin case, but there were no mandarines forward. Passion fruit sold at from 10s. to 13s. par half gin case. Pineapples met with good competition at 10s. to 10s. por doublo case. Melbourne-grown cherries, shipped via Sydney, sold at from 255. to 355. per crate, but shipments which landed yesterday direct from Melbourne sold at 20s. to 28s. Lemons aro exceedingly scarce, and a small shipment which arrived from Mildura realised from 20s. to 30s. per case, according to condition. Tho market is bare of Island oranges. .•Local. cucumbers aro now coming in , freely, and selling at 4d. to 7d. each. American, apples are selling steadily at from Us.- to 15s. per ease. Local hot.house'grapes arrived from the Hutt yesterday, and made 2s. sd. per lb. Strawberries from. Auckland and local districts are selling at' lOd. to Is. per lb. Gooseberries ate now coming in in large quantities, and: local-grown sorts are worth H<l. to 2d. lb; There is a good demand for hothouse. tomatoes, and Nelson and local-grown lots are selling at from lid. to Is. 3d. lb. , The first red currants and cherry-plums of the season are expected from Nelson daily, and Australian stone fruits will probably come to hand 'next-week. : Asparagus, in large bundles, is worth 9d. to Is. The market is .well supplied ■with rhubarb at 2s. to ss. per dozen. Heavy supplies of new potatoes are now : coming in, and values rtmge from ljd. to 2d. lb. There is a moderate sale for old potatoes at >611 to £12 per ton. 1 rench beans are in good demand at /d. to BM. lb. - 'Cabbage are in heavy supply at Bs. to ss. Gd, per sack, but cauliflowers'are scarce at Bs. to 125.. Parsnips, „ carrots, and beetroot are all in good demand, and worth ss. to Bs. per sack. Spring onions, radish, white turnips, and carrots are also; in good demand at 6d. to Is. per dozen bunches. Lettuce is selling at from fe. to 7s. per case, according to quality.- Nelson growers aro forwarding fairly; largo shipments i-of green peas daily, and are getting from sd. to 9d. per peck.' Californian onions bring 15s. per caso of about 1001b. Eggs are plentiful at'lid. to Is. per dozen, but poultry is scarce, cockerels commanding 6s. 6d., hens Is. to ss„ and ducks '6s. to Ss. per pair.
