STRIKES AND THE LAW.
TROUBLE IN SYDNEY. By Telegraph—Press Association-CopyriSht Sydney, November 15. Mr. Beeby, Minister for Labour in' the Stato Cabinet, has informed tlie secretary of tho Gas Employees' Union that unless a' stop is put to tho proposed, ballot on the question of calling a strike to secure increased wages,'he will bring into operation the clause of tho Arbitration Act which enacts that the Court may grant an injunction against persona continuing to instigate or aid a strike. It ia understood tho union -will persist i'n the ballot, which. begins to-day, and affects three companies, employing 1700. Others -who will probably strike in sympathy will bring the total to two thousand. • ' . The Assembly has rejected several of the Legislative Council's amendments' to the Gas Bill. IF A STRIKE OCCURS. (Rec. November 15, 8.30 p.m.) Sydney, November 15. In the event of a gas strike, Sydney will have only two days' supply on hand. BUTCHERS' STRIKE. CITY MEAT SUPPLY AFFECTED. (Eec. November 15, 8.35 p.m.) Sydney, November 15. There has been a recurrence of the trouble among the mutton butchers at Glebe Island. An agreement wag reached to resume work pending the review of the award, which had caused the cessation. In tho meantime 74 summonses have been issued against the participators in last week's strike. . The men now decline to resume work unless the summonses are withdrawn. There are 150 butchers involved, and the stoppage is seriously interfering with the oity meat supply. .Mr. Beeby states that the law does not allow of the withdrawal of tho summonses against tho butchers.
