NOTES AMD COMMENTS, [Bt Glen-coe.] , . A capital programme' has been arranged for, the. Ealigitikei'„Racing Club's 'Sum-, nier meeting, wiiiclK!S;.to. : ,;bs..held at,, Bull's' on Dceember 11 anu'l2.-. Otosts -are re-' minded that nomination® for all events close on Friday next, with the club's sec'.retary, Mr. H. .. A.. Goodall. - Acceptances for the first day's etents at tlie Marlborough Racing' Club'-s meet* ins close to-morrow with tho secretary, Mr. "L,"'Griffiths/:Blenheim. ~, Bon Reve and Bleriot, who both hold Unbeaten- records as three-year-olds, will not meet in the Great Northern Derby, as Bleriot does not appear to have been entered for that..event. She and Bon Revo, are, however,- both in. the Royal Stakes, to be run at the same meeting. . Acceptances for the first day's events at the -Feilding Jockey Club's meeting Close on Saturday next. ~ Waiowera, Merry Roe, and Bleriot, who carried Mr, F. Hall's colours to vic,t«y oil ;t.ho first''day of the Avondale Jockey Club's meeting, also won a race each on the'second day of the Auckland Racing Club's Spring meeting. On the latter occasion Uio victories of the horses named were in three successive races. It is an unusual occurrence for tile same owner to win three races in succession nowadays, though the late Mr.- G. G. Stead did so more than once, and has won-as many as live'races in the same day at Riccarton. The flat racing season in England will practically close next Saturday week, when the Manchester November Handicap, will be decided. Mr. Fred Hall headed the list of winning owners at the Auckland: Racing Club's Spring . meeting, His chenue amounted to .£1550. The next on the list were Mrs. E. A. Lindsay ,£550, and Mr, ?. W; Arnold .£5,50. ■ -..' .Bon Rove started only once as a, two-year-old, winning the Lagwhor Plate at the Ashburton. Autumn-meeting. Ho op--ened his- account this season by winning the Braemar Welter Handicap at tho Ashburton Spring meeting, and. since then, has won the Wanganui Guineas, the New .Zealand Derby, and tho Stead' Gold Cup, and dead-heated in the Stewards' Handicap. In his six raees, Bon Reve has been ridden by four different jockeys. . Principal winning- owners at the- Canterbury Jockey Club's Metropolitan! meeting were: Messrs. W. G. and G. L. Stead, •S807; Mr. E, J. Watt, .£2110; Sir George Clifford, .£1280; Mr. W. 5. Davidson, .£1150; Mr. T. H. Lovvry, X'B9o; Hon. J. D. Ormond, .£850; Mr. C. G. Dalgetv, ■J6787;-Hr. H. Whitney, .6705; and Mr, W, ; Nidd, .£7OO. Had the -Melbourne Gup been run before the New Zealand Cup, it is probable that Allegory would have-touched a still shorter price for the Now Zealand Cup than he did. It will be remembered that in the Trial Stokes at Randwick, Alleßory ran third to Piastre, who won the Melbourne Cup. Allegory was to have been offered at auction in Christehurch on Monday,. but so far no advice has been received as to whether or not ho was sold. | ■ . ■ L. Wilson's cheque for tiding fees at the Canterbury Jockey Club's recent fixture represents probably the largest amount ever drawn, by a "jockey as the result of successes at one meeting in the Dominion. , There is no getting away from the fact that by comparison with former years the handicap horses entered ,i.t Foildiiig this month: are generally of a better class than before. If Los Ahgelos, Autilmirus, Ban Reve, Bon Ton, and Brown Owl go to the post for the St. Andrew's Handicap, tho race will bs .as full of interest as any cup race run in the Dominion. Accommodation has been booked at Ellerslie at Cup time for horses from the Riccarton stables controlled by R, J. Mason, by Mumy-Aynsley. 11. Cuffs, and R. OlDonnell. If the.A.R.C. Summer meeting is patronised by these'trainer:!, in addition to the several leading mentors from this end of the North island, it will rival in every way ths recent record meeting at Riccarton. With the New Zealand Cup .nice-tins satisfactorily disposed of, turf followers will have their choice of Timarn and Blenheim next '< Wednesday and Thitri day, and good sport is promised at both places. Cider's win in the C. B. Fisher Plato last Saturday makes it appear as if h« Was unfortunate in being baaten in the ', V.B.C. Derby tho previous w-eek. It is extraordinary tho runs of luck —good and otherwise—that sometimes follow jockeys. At likenrtan last week L. Wilson rode seven winners, while the crack horsynieu, Deoley and Oliver, only rode- two and one respectively. The two latter, horsoinnn aro eat-h riding as well as ever at tho present time, but tho stables whioh retain them aro out of lucS and their wins at Riccarton wero achieved.
lon "foreign"-mounts. Dcelcy's riding- in tho Stead Cup won tlio race for Bon Iteve, and a similar remark might bo made with truth nlxmt Oliver's handling of that horse in the Derby, when, nothing bur liis ruler's excellent judgment of pate carried the* horso first plist tlio post. Many people inquired for tho great Trafalgar at l-'lcmjngton during tho recent meeting. Tlio Messrs. Mitchell, ia reply to a Melbourne pressman, said that they would have boon pleased, had they - been asked by the V.'H.C. to do so, to have paraded Trafalgar on Melbourne Cup day, Describing tho Cup Steeplechase at Fleminglon last week, a Sydney writer said the New Zenlander, Continuance, gave Melbourne racegoers a taste of his quality, by winning easily, wth 13st., after Bibbwiluko had shown tho way into the ■straight. Melbourne courscites are accustomed to good steeplechasers, bat it is questionable whether they- have seen anything better than Continuance for a considerable time. It appears that in the Melbourne C'np, the favourite, Duke Foote, did not: finish closer to the front than fifteenth, and did not at: any part of the race appear to have ii good winning chance. He mado a dash after passing the abattoirs, but though the run curried him pretty close ■to the first fliglvty.his ridfir says he weakened from' that, out,- anil never -had a chance from the turn.. He'finished in a very wearied fashion No excuse could be mado for him, as nothing seemed fresher or brighter prior, to th-s race. The English mail brings particulars of Prince Palatine's great victory with IDst, 71b. in tho Jockey Club Stakes on October 3. It appears that Stedfast was a warm favourite. From tlio Bushes the straggle was coniinsal to tho pair, hut tho "Prince" was always going the more freely. Just for n stride or two, when Stedfast made his effort, there was the glimmer of a possibility that Prince Palatine' would bo . stopped up the hill by liis disadvantage of weights, but he ran on in gallant fashion, and fully, a hundred yards fWtn tho finish liis success was so obvious that tlio , crowd continued to cheer lustily, for although the success of the Stanley House colt would have better suited tho pockets of the majority, they realised what a great performance the winner had aecom-' plished. He returned to the paddock little-' distressed, though sweating a trifle. Those connected with Stedfast had no excuse to offer for his failure except, of course, that. lie had had to be stopped in his work. It is indeed curious that while we have scarcely any Herod horses of much note in training our neighbours across tho Channel have plenty, and to spare, and it is to be hoped' that' our breeders will do what they can to atone for their neglect in recent years of Herod blood (says "Yigi* lant" in the London "Sportsman-"). The more wo go on breeding in and in to Eclipse the more vitally necessary it will become to provide our inbred Eclipse stalHoiis with mares containing strong infusions close up of Herod and also of Matchem blood, but as the Mateheiu line is going strongly it is now needful only to see that 'onr supply of Herod blood is augmented, in order that 'our breed of • thoroughbreds may not deteriorate... That it. has of late years already done so is the opinion of not a few unbiased judges, and unless wo cherish the blood of the third of the tl"-ee great stallions to whom we are indebted for the supr-emacy of our bloodstock, 'degeneration will surely - fol;, low.
