THE TANNERS-A DEVELOPMENT.
—^__^_^— . LEATfIER PRICES TO RISE. (By telegraph.—Press Association.) Palmerston, November 8. , A conference of representatives of the tanning industry from all over the Dominion was held here to-day. It was resolved' to increase the price of leather* by a penny per lb.; This will make a difference to . wholesale , bootmakers of about 3s. on each dozen pairs of boots. The reason for the inorease is the scarcity of hides, owing to the quantity being exported. The hides are going chiefly to Vancouver, and the esport trade' is said to bo almost exclusively in the haftds of one. firm, whose headquarters are in Auckland. The tanners suggest that the situation might be- Saved >by an increase on the duty, on imported boots; otherwise the local bootmaking industry is seriously threatened. . The president of the Tanners' Conference informed a "Manaivatu Times" reporter that it is not unlikely that there will be a further increase, in the price of leather shortly if hides do not become more plentiful. At the usual sales at Palmerston today ox hides jumped up by a penny per lb,, prices now being up BJd;, equal to ' nearly .£2 ss. per hide. " Cow hides increased from ljd. to* Jd., and fetched up to 7Jd. this being equal to nearly 30s. each. Calfskins sold at iss. pflr skin. This is an advance of 3s. on cow hides and is. 06 ox hides. The New Zealand tanners require over 4000 hides pet weeks
