At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, Thomas Boyd, Joseph Deeming, Frank - Sharkey, James M'DQlinell, Thomas Rivers, John Collins, -and John Jones pleaded guilty to charges of having absented themselves without leavis from the steamer Rakaia on. Tuesday last. . . . Mr. M. Myers, -who appeared for the . New Zealand Shipping' Company, -stated that these men- had left the steamer Just before it vr'afc to have sailed from Weir 'lington, and great inconvenience had been caused the company. ' • ' One of the accused.stated that.they, had signed on. at Sydney on the understand- ' ing that there were ho "scabs" on board, nnd that subsequently they had found that there was a noUrunioniet aboard.' The seven were convicted asd sentenced ■to 48 hours-' imprisonment, The .Court directed that they should be placed aboard the vessel when she sailed. The accused "Were reqiiiled to- pay costs amounting to Bs. each. . j Before leaving the dock one of the men remarked: "She Won't sail with us on board!" . ■'.'..'.-■■ 'OTHER CASES. Patrick Gibbons and James Patrick Hassott pleaded guilty to «. charge, of their having' stolen two brass port lights, valued nt £2, Mis.,, belonging to the Union Steam Ship Company, Limited. Each was fined: £2. For insobriety, William Johnston was fined 10s. , ; ■:.
