SEAWEED & BLIGHT.
•DEPARTMENTAL EXPLANATION. •: A somewhat belated answer to a news ' items which appeared in The Dominion of' September 9, is forthcoming in the Agricultural Department's journal for October. The item in- question stated that Jlr. Francis Auckinleck, of AVairere/ near Cheviot, had, by using seaweed as a fertiliser round.'the stems of his fruit trees, prevented "Blight" of any kind attacking plums, apricots, pears; apples, nectarines, or peaches. It was also stated that Mr. Courtier, Government Orchard Instructor, had frequently inspected tho property, but could find no trace of blight of any kind. Mr. Courtlier was asked by tho Director of the Fruit' Division for a report on the matter. Prom this, says Mr. Kirk, it' would appear that the writer of the newspaper article in question has evidently made some mistake. Mr. Courtier states that ho has inspected the orchard on two occasions, and found trees infected with Ted spider,_ mnssel and shot-hole fungus,- while some of tho potatoes we re suffering from Irish blight. It also appeads that other orchards in the immediate neighbourhood where seaweed has not been used are also, if not quite, as free oi woolly aphis. ;
