Mr. Sherman was an experienced Congressman, having boen in the House of Eepresentatives for nearly twenty years. He was closely.associated' with Mr. Cannon.for many years, Speakerof the House of Sepresentatives, and as Mr. Cannon's deputy he presided over the House more frequently than any- other member. . In appearance Mr. Sherman suggested 'an English squire; he had attractive personal qualities, and was popular. Although, a lawyer by profession, he succeeded as a banker, and in business as well as in politics. In 1906 he became known throughout the country' as chairman of the national Congressional ciun- . paign committee, ivhich conducts the elec-tions-in Congressional distiicts. He made strong efforts to preserve the Eepublican , majority in the House, and appealed for popular dollar' contributions to the campaign fund, an appeal -which revealed that !. the millionaire members of. the party had not given their accustomed financial sup- ■ port.
