OBITUARY.

CAPTAIN HENRY ROSE. Word was reoeived in Wellington yesterday stating that Captain Henry Rose, vory well known in Wellington, had passed away in London at tho age .of 79. The late Captain Rose was born iu Central America in 1833, and went to sea at tho age of 14,. bccamo third officer at 18, and obtained his captain's certificate at tho ago of 24. Between tho years 1860 mid 1875 ho traded between London and Canterbury. Ho originally served as a master in tho old White Star Line, but when, in tho late fifties, tho present White Star Lino bought tho old company's flag, Captain Roso oonmiaudod tho Mermaid and tho Merope. Both vessels wero trading to New Zealand at that time. Captain Rose commanded tho Shaw-Savill Company's old Zealandia on her maiden trip to theso shores. Subsequently ho left that company and joined tho Ne'w Zealand Shipping Company. Ho was given command of the first vessel tho company had built —tho Rakaia. Later on ho was in command of tho Waimate. In 1870 ho left tho sea to tako charge of tho Wellington branch of tho New Zealand Shipping Company. In 1898 he retired and went Home to reside. During his stay here, Cnplain Roso was for twenty years a member of tho Wellington Chamber of Commerce, and ho also filled tho position of chairman of tho Harbour Board for several terms. Since he went Homo in )S9B ho has made two trips to Now Zealand, his last visit being in May of this year. On that occasion he left for London by tho Rcnmora, and was accompanied by Mrs. Rose and Miss Roso. . Captain Roso loavei o widow and an unmarried daughter in London, another daughter (wife of Mr. C. V. ilouphtOn, manager of tho New Zealand Shipping Company at Auckland), and three sonsMr. .T. 6. Koso (Messrs. W. and G. Turnbull and Co.), Mr. W. H. Roso (Messrs. 11. G. Anderson and Co., Wellington), and Lieutenant A. 11. Rose, cf tho British Army. As a mark of respect tho Harbour Board and shipping oflicos in Wellington had their flags at half-mast 3'ostevday.
