DOMESTIC TRAGEDY.
Fremantle, October 30. A' French settler named Marius Martin gave a neighbour a sealed noto stating that Mrs. Martin had been murdered, and that her body would be found in Martin's house. Tho body was found hacked about the head with a tomahawk. Martin is missing. Later. Martin's body has been found hanging from a tree. The wife was dissatisfied with the loneliness of tho bush and there had been frequent quarrels. The couple had separated and the wife had summoned her husband on Thursday for threatening to shoot her. The magistrate effected a reconciliation and they returned home on Monday.
AUSTRALIA'S NAVY.
London, October 29. Australian sailors have joined the Commonwealth cruiser Melbourne at Birkenhead for her trials.
CHINESE FINANCE,
Peking, October 29. The six Powers in,tho banking syndicate have protested against the alienation of a portion of the salt Tevcnue as a guarantee for the Crisp loan, while tho Boxer indemnity has not been paid up to date.

Sydney, October 30. A fruit famine u prevailing here. It is twenty years since fruit was so scarce.
MOUNT LYELL DISASTER.
Hobart, October 30. Vapour and fumes aTo still issuing from the North Lyell mine. There is no apparent diminution of tho gases, and until a change comes it will be impossible to attempt to recover the forty-two bodies still in tho mine.
WOMEN AND DRESS.
Sydney, October 30. Tho recent strictures passed on women nnd dress at the Congregational Women's Congress have fluttered the dovecotcs and there is much controversy in tho newspapers for and against modern modes.
BULL FOE NEW ZEALAND.
Sydney, October 29. Thd New Zealand Government has purchased the Shorthorn bull Ransom, which secured third prize at the Royal Agricultural Show.
SHIPPING FIRM IN LIQUIDATION
Melbourne, Octobor 29. A Hob art firm petitioned for the wind-ing-up of the Australian Shipping Company, Melbourne (which owned the steamer Papanui, wrecked at St. Helena) on tho ground that a judgment for .£IBB lis. 9d. had not been satisfied. Tho petition was accepted, and an official liquidator appointed.
FLOGGING OF PRISONERS.
Melbourne, October 29. There is a strong movement on foot, supported by the Churches and tho Labour party, to delete tho floggings to which two prisoners, Moore and M'Donald, were recently sentenced, on tho ground that the flogging of criminals is savage and repugnant.
PLAGUE IN NEW CALEDONIA,
Sydney, October 29. News has been received by mail that eight coses of plnguo occnrrwl at Noumea from September 17 to October 17, comprising one Javanese and seven Kanakas. Five cases proved fatal. Tho authorities aro endeavouring to stamp out tho plague.
