The Minister for Finance (tho non. James Allen) will leavo for London on December 13. Ho will travel by tho Orient steamer Orama, arriving in London about February 1.
"Mr. Robert Leo (chairman of tho Wellington Education Board) and Mr. T. K. 'Fleming (chief inspector) have been, renppointed to act as tho board's representatives on tho Commilteo of Advice of the Teachers' Training College at Wellington.
At to-monw's meeting of tlio St. John Ambulance Association Mr. J. G. W. Aitken will move: "That Mr. Charles I'. Fowles l>o recommended for somo further recognition of his services from the Chapter of tho Ordor of St. John, and that
this committee suggests his appointment to tho grade of Honorary Serving Brother." Ambulance Day arrangements will also be discussed.
The death occurred on Sunday of Firstclass Gunner Charles liarrou, of tho Eoyal Now Zealand Artillery, and eon of the late Mr. C. C. N. Uarron, for many years a member of the Now Zealand Hansard staff. Tho deceased only complained of being unwell on Thursday last, and ho passed away on Sunday morning. The funeral, which took place yesterday, was attended by Colonel G. F. C. Campbell, Major Hume, Captain Symon, Lieut. Richmond, and tho rank and file of tho Royal Artillery in Wellington. Tho cleooased left a widow and child.
In receiving yesterday the resignations of Miss A, D. Bright, of Mikiiniki, and Miss N. Johnston, of Korokoro, the Wollington induration Board placed im record its high appreciation of their long and faithful service in the Wellington district. Both teachers are retiring oil superannuation.
Mr. W. A. Beddoe, tho Canadian Trade Commissioner will meet tho Vancouver High School Cadets in Wellington next week.
Mr. Chappoll, of Gape Town, who is on ft combined business and pleasure tour of the world, is a visitor to Wellington. Ho states that Capo Town is rapidly regaining the ground lost during the years of acuto depression which followed the war. The price of property is increasing steadily, and such is the conditions of things now that houses aro difficult to procure. What has contributed to a groat extent to Cape Town's prosperity is the fact that it is now the seat of Government for United South Africa, and members and their families, and all who have business to do with men and measures connected with the Assembly come to Cape Town every year. The Nationalist (Dutch) party was now in power, with Botha as Premier, but Mr. Chappell is inclined to think that the pendulum will swing over in -favour of the Unionists at the next election.
There passed away at Paeroa on Saturday another of New Zealand's old colonists, in the person of Mr. Alfred J. Thorp. Mr. Thorn fought through the whole of the Maori War, and early in (he forties settled in Paeroa with .his father. Mr. Thorp was for several years a number of the Thames County Council as the representative of tho OhinemUri riding; ho also represented the Ncthorton Eiding on the Ohinemuri County Council. Tho deceased gentleman took a prominent port in the formation of the Thames Valley Co-operntivo Dairying Company, and was for several years chairman of the directors, and at the time of his death was a director of tho company. He leaves a widow and a large family to mourn their loss.—Auckland "Star."
