LOCAL AND GENERAL.
In reply to a renewed application from tho Wellington Education Board with respect to a Government grant in. aid of tho erection of a school in tho Silverstream district, concerning which there lias been considerable local agitation in tho past, tho Education Department has intimated that its previous decision—application declined—must bo adhered to, but that an application for increased accommodation at Upper Hutt would bo considered. At the monthly meeting of tho Wellington Education Board yesterday Mr. A. W. Hogg said that ho rather supported tho view of the Department that with tho proximity of the Upper Hutt School, and tho train service for tho transport of the children from Silverstream, there waa no need for a school in tho latter district. After a conversational discussion it was agreed to submit proposals for additional accommodation at Upper Hutt. Tho Wellington Education Board had accepted the offer of the Wellington Hospital Board to ■ undertake such fumigation as in the opinion of the Health •Department or tho Hospital Board may bfr neccssnry on. account of infectious disease; tho services of the health inspector to be provided free; tho cost of formalin nnd of any extra labour that may bo required in the larger schools to bo borno by the Education Board. The board will endeavour to make a similar arrangement with the Wairarapa Hospital Board.
