ADDRESS BY MR. PAYNE, M.P.
• 1 There was a fair gathering at the Empress Theatre last evening, when - Sir. Payne, M.P., delivered an address entitled "The Bridge Across tho Gulf.". It was largely a recitation of arguments in favour of Socialism as an ideal condition of society. Mr. Payne declared himself as a supporter of tho strike as a for the triumph of the worker, and lie upheld the miners on strike at VYoibi. He referred to the House of Represe-ita tives as consisting of eight true members and 72 "dummies." Speaking of newspapers, Mr. Payne was of the opinion that they should- be licensed, and Ko forced to" report speeches, inside and . rtsido the House, in full.
