AUCKLAND BUTTER.
", PROSPECTS FOR THE SEASON. , (By Teleiraph.—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, October 25. ;' "If the butter production of the Auckland province has not doubled itself above the present output within a very fewyears I shall be very much surprised," was remarked to a reporter by a promin.ant figure in dairying circles yesterday morning. Tho opening up of so much new land for' dairying purposes, tho extensive firoduction of butter-fat from'second-class ands which, before scientific treatment were considered to be unsilited to the industry, the introduction so largely of the system of home separator, the success'of .local butter on the Vancouver market, the opening up of new markets, and many other potent reasons were advanced in support of the optimistic prediction above quoted. "The Vancouver service," said the gentleman in question, "is of very great value to our dairying industry, and it is gratifying to hear how well people coming from that side of the Pacific speak of the quality of our butter. If lands now olosed are opened up in small holdings, T believe that the production of cream will be found more profitable than tho frozen meat of. other such industries, and that ;in time wo shall become a dairying country like Denmark." Inquiries made concerning, prospects for the ensuing season shoived that they were most inviting. Already a large increase over the amount of butter'usually produced up to this stage of tho season has taken place.and all parts of the province are said to bo growing larger. HolsteinFresians and Jerseys are increasing in popularity, by reason of Hie good results which they have given since the inception of the industry, and it is anticipated that a Temarkably fino display of these dairying breeds will bo made at 'tho Metropolitan Spring Show, to be held at the ond of next month... Large ...herds, of course, count for nothing: unless:a careful system of weeding out is adopted. In this connection, it is nleasiug to find that tho activities of tho Cow Testing Association have been increasingly great, and that cows incapabio of coming up to reasonable standards are being discharded for milking purposes. The association has been particularly successful in tho neighbourhood of Auckland, at Whangarei, Thames Valley, Cambridge, ■ Northern Wai- < roa, etc.
There arc- not many new factories sinco last season, but _ those already in existence are extending tho scope of their operations, and outputs will generally increase. Most of the factories are accepting home separated cream.
